A wedding on the farm owned by the family for generations. Hay bales for pews, each one draped in a quilt pulled from somebody’s closet — no two alike. They met for a first look by the pasture fence before anyone else arrived, then married in a clearing in the woods, a fall wreath on the tree standing in for an altar. Thirty people. Jars of jam the bride and her mother had put up went home with the guests. And when it was over, they left on a hay trailer behind the tractor while everyone waved ribbon wands over their heads — a send-off straight out of a Jane Austen novel.
